The Longest Day

You are digital natives. You have grown up with electronic media. Think about what it would be like to live, even briefly, without these tools and toys. Go to the link below and read the article. Then write a reflective comment. Your comment should be one or two paragraphs in length and should demonstrate that you have thought about the article. Your writing should express an opinion and should address questions that I ask in my posting. Spelling, punctuation and grammar count as part of the assessment.

How would you feel if you were required to go without electronic media for 24 hours? What sorts of things would you have to give up if you did this? Are you dependant upon electronic media to the same degree that the students in the article are or are you different? What do you think that you would do with the extra time that you would have? What would be your biggest problem and how would you deal with it?

Reading the article “The Longest Day”, I started to think, for the first time in my life, what my life would be without electronic media. No TV’s, No Mp3’s, and No Computers, a life without those “basics” in life would be impossible and reading the article I know that I am not the only one who thinks living without Electronic Media would be impossible. I just need my time checking my E-mail and watching TV every once in a while, how else am I supposed to stay in touch with my friends around the world? It would be as good as impossible!

If I had to do the assignment that the college students in the article “The Longest Day” I would maybe manage to do it, but if I did it would be with difficulties. I would have to read or play out side for an entire after noon; I would not able to use any computer in the school or at home or any where! I think that the biggest problem I would have to face would be trying to stay away from any electronic media; I would be too tempted to turn on the radio or go onto the internet. I’m just wondering, what would a life without any electronic media?

If someone tells me to stop using electric medias for the whole day, my first question to that person will be, “You’re kidding, aren’t you?” This is how I am close to the electric medias: cell phones, T.V, computers, I-Pod and much more. It would be very hard trying not to touch anything that has to do with medias. If I don’t use any electric media for 24 hours, I would have to write all my essays and writing homework all in hand (which would be agonizingly painful and would bring a severe cramp to your hand.) instead of typing on the computer. I would have nothing to do at my house if I don’t play games or watch T.V shows. This would be really boring except for reading books. And even though I like reading books, I can’t sit on a couch for more than 5 or 6 hours and read. I have to watch something to relieve my stress. I don’t usually use my I-Pod or my phone at my house, so that wouldn’t be of a problem. In the article, the students seemed to be addicted to all mass media, but I’m not the type really can’t live without those. For one thing, I only watch one Korean channel on the T.V and it doesn’t work from 7:00p.m to 12a.m. Additionally, my mom isn’t the type who watches the T.V a lot, so she decides the time for how long we should watch T.V. If I have additional times, I would try going out in the garden and read for 2 or 3 hours maximum or practice sports. I can also talk more with my parents and play cards together then going on the MSN and chatting. There would be lots of possibilities that I can do, now I think of it. My biggest problem of now using any mass media would be that the day would be a bit boring and my hands would hurt a lot from writing essays with my hands. The only solution is to endure it by thinking that this would be only for one day, which is only a very small percentage of my life.

Sometimes we seem to forget how much we rely on technology, for our entertainment, for school or for the office and the economy; our conversation are based on what see on TV, do on the computer and read on the internet. If you look closely you begin to realize how much in our lives is advertised, TV advertisements, and billboards alongside the road, but also the casing of MP3 players and the logo on someone’s computer. It proves how much we indulge ourselves in the mass media, becoming living advertisements rather than trend setters.

Living 24 hours without electronic media would leave me with little to do. My social life is largely based on the people I keep in contact with abroad. My school work is usually researched on the internet, or, and written on the computer. Although those 24 hours would teach me to appreciate what true work means and would probably give me more time to focus on my studies, it is hard to imagine how people worked without a computer, and how much we seem to forget what a revolutionizing idea the personal computer was. The lack of electronic media would take away the connection I feel with new ideas, forcing me to come up with them rather than to find them on the internet. The electronic media has become an addiction, a tool we use daily, to connect and research, but also to fraud and plagiarize. The computer has become a tool we use daily, and everyday computers become faster and more powerful, more practical and more used. It proves how innovative we are in this generation, but also how easily we forget that some tools, like the internet, can also hurt.

Reading this article made me realize how much time i spend on the computer everyday just playing games, but i barely watch TV or talk on the phone or even listen to music anymore. I am definitely not as addicted to electronic media as some people I know are, I had one friend in my old school who wouldn't even know what to do with himself if he couldn't play a computer or video game or chat with a friend.

If i was asked to not use electronic media for 24 hours, i know exactly what i would do, i don't depend on media for survival as some people do. I would go out and play soccer and baseball for just about the whole day, and i could do that if i really wanted to, i might read for a couple hours in the morning when i wake up and at night when I'm in bed. I could do this for probably 3-5 days because i never really talk to my friends a lot outside of school so i don't need that. I think i would actually enjoy a life without any electronic media, at least for a week, after that, maybe not.

I would not be okay with going without electronic media for 24 hours because it is not that easy to stop watching TV or use any other media devices for 24 hours. This is because we are just used to using these things and so it would be very hard to stop using them all at once. I would have to give up watching TV, using my cell phone and my landline, using my iPod, and the car radio and CD player. I am dependant upon electronic media to the same degree that the students in the article are. I basically use my laptop more than four times per day. I also watch TV whenever I am not out or eating and talk on the phone wherever I am.

In the extra time that I would have, I would go out with my friends, spend some time with my family, sleep, and eat. My biggest problem would be stopping myself from using any digital devices. Knowing that my iPod, my cell phone, my landline, and my laptop are actually functioning and not being able to use them would be very hard. Another problem could be remembering not to use any digital devices because most of the things we use nowadays are digital devices, which we are used to using, and so it would be hard to remember

After reading "The Longest Day" I realized how hard it would be if I was told to go for 24 hours without electronics. I think it would be almost impossible. I mean if you think about it I bet over half of my homework is done on the computer. Part of my everyday life is using electronic media. I’m on the phone for at least an hour ever day, on the computer for about 2 hours every day, and listening to my ipod for at least 30 minutes every day. Whenever I am bored I watch TV, talk on the phone, get on the computer or listen to music on the radio or on my ipod. If I wasn’t allowed to use those things my whole life style would change.
Electronic media is everywhere. This is partly why it would be so hard to go for 24 hours without it. Living overseas going to an American school a lot of my friends come and go. Electronic media is the main source of communication between the people that leave and me. My life would be much more difficult without electronic media. It has become part of my everyday life.

The professor’s idea was great. If we stop using media in our lives, we will actually realize how much time we are wasting. Although media can be helpful in some ways, it actually has a negative effect on our lives. Most teenagers and students use media devices such as Ipods, play stations, and computers. If we actually get rid of these devices we can achieve much more in our lives. Living without any of these devices for 24 hours would be really difficult for me. I would have to give up my Ipod, my cell phone, my play station, my TV, and my personal computer that I’m working on right now! Everyone is dependent on these devices, mostly high school and college students. But personally, I’m not that dependent on them like the students are in the article. I can survive easily during these 24 hours.

With the extra time that I have, I can read a book, a newspaper, or even study harder for school. My biggest problem however would be the use of the computer. Nowadays we use computers for everything. Be it for reading news, socializing, and even for school. I don’t think any school would survive if computers were prohibited. Finally, if we live without any digital media tools in our lives, life would be much simpler and much more worth it.

I think I would be able to go through 24 hours without electronics, I would probably find something to do. It would be hard though because I'm a technology addict. I simply can't live without it. I spend most of my time at home on my computer, it's like a part of my daily life. I listen to my iPod a lot outdoors. The television is my savior when I'm bored. And I always have music playing in my room; I can't live without it.
I think I'm more addicted to technology than the students in the article. I don't think I can have someone hide my cellphone from me, I'd go crazy trying to find it to see if someone called. But still, if I had 24 hours without technology I'd find somethings to do. I like reading so maybe I would do that more, I can get more homework done in less time, and I could spend more time with my family. The biggest problem I guess would be communicating with people that aren't living close to me (like the students in the article experienced). I've always been able to reach people that aren't in the same country either using cell phone or internet. Also, boredom would eventually take over and drive me crazy.

After reading this artical "The Longest Day" I realize that I would have never been ablt to go on with out technology for 24 hours. I believe that if I had no T.V. or computer to use all day I would have gone insane! I always use my email and I watch T.V. a lot as well. If i was unable to contact anyone outside my house I would get bored.

The assignment that the professor gave them must have been a hard one to do. Even my mom and dad need technology to get by the day. I myself wouldn't be able to stay away from my computer for a day. I believe I would have failed that assignment even if it counted a whole 50% of my grade.

In my mind I would feel relaxed but alert at the same time, I would feel relaxed because i wouldn't have to deal with the computer getting stuck or people calling me or messeging me all the time. I would be alert because i've been using technology my whole life and it's a habit now to just pick up my phone and run through the gallery or play a game on the computer, it's part of my daily routine. I would have had to give up my cellphone, my laptop, and my television because those are the three only things i mainly use.

Well i am sort of different, the only reason i would be dependant on the computer is when i need a definition of a word and too lazy to take a dictionary and look through it. In my extra time i would read a book, play soccer, run, karting, study for an upcoming test, and no sleep, i never seep in my free time. My biggest problem would be someone calling me and not being able to answer, im a curious person so i would be so tempted to know what the person is calling me for.

I found that the article “The Longest Day” was quite interesting, I never fully realized until now how much we all depend on media and technology. I would feel that I was almost lost in the world without these parts of my life. The biggest problem I would have to face would be giving up my music. That is one thing that I can’t go a day with out… it would mess up my whole day’s schedule. I don’t think that I can relate quite as much as the student in the article could to media because I spend most of the day time without media. It would be the night s that would kill me.

One of the biggest problems I would face is not getting stuck somewhere. I am usually very unorganized when it comes to my afternoons so I usually have to have my cell just incase I have to change my plans. The main way to change that would be to just plan out my day. In truth it would be nice to have some more quiet time in which I can study or read which I don’t do that often. I think I could do it in theory but when the day actually was there I would find it much harder than I thought.

While reading this article thoughts were running through my head like what would life be like with out technology. I never realized how much electronics people use everyday. Without media life would be really hard to live through every day. I agree with the professor if we stop using media in our lives, we will actually realize how much time we are wasting. That proves a lot that media makes the day seems faster.

I agree with the name of the article “The Longest Day” because without electronics everything would be boring and the day would go really slow and would feel long. If my computer, TV, I Pod or other MP3 devices, radio, video games, CD players, records or cell phones (or land lines) were taken away from me for 24 hours I would go crazy from being bored. It would feel like as if I was in jail for a whole day. I would probably find a new hobby to do for instance a new sport, would spend more time with my family. My biggest problem is that everyday I use the computer for doing homework or chatting with my friends, watching TV as soon as I get home from school, and while doing my homework I listen to music. So if all those are taken it won’t feel right.

i cant imagine a whole day without electronics.. we should all be thanking who ever invinted the tv, the computers, the radio, everything. 90% of my life is based on technology and i dont think i will be able to live one hour without technology. but the question i always ask myslef is that how could the people that lived way back like in the years 400 or 500 BC how could they do it? how could they live without sending messgaes to each other with out phone calls without using the computer to get updated news?? none of that they had to walk all the way to the persons house just to send a message. a lot of companes relay on technology and if they dont have techology a lot of them would end up closing down. for exmaple one of the richest companies in the world is Microsoft imagine if we all te sudden we lost techonlogy the whole companie would go bank rupt. what i am trying to say is that our whole lives are based on computers and technology in general and i dot think i can personaly live one hour without computers.

Imagining a day without electronic media is extremely difficult, considering it is everywhere. Everyday I use my cell phone, ipod, internet, and tv. Nowadays electronic media has become as vital as oxygen, so to speak. Since most of my friends live in the Untied States, I use Myspace daily. My stereo and ipod have become essential to my daily life. I use them throughout the day including when I am working on homework. When I think about it, in order to do this assignment, I have to use electronic media.

Despite my addiction to electronic media, I think taking a fast from it would be good for me. It would give me a chance to have quality time with my family. I give those students a lot of credit for managing to go 24 hours without digital media, a task not easily completed by today's youth.

I really don’t even know where to begin describing this article. In a word, it’s pathetic. I don’t need to wonder about how this would feel since I spent a month without any form of electronic media since our phone line was disconnected, therefore there was no Internet, and our T.V. needed a renewal of some sort and nobody had the time to call the company to have it set up. I also didn’t have any credit so phoning anybody also had to be scratched off my list of things to do. 24 hours is pathetic. My first 24 hours of no electronics was the absolute easiest out of the whole month because sleeping and organizing random things around the house only gets boring after a week. I believe the boredom associated with the lack of electronics varies depending on the person and where you live. For example, what I tried to do during my month without electronics was go for a walk or go to some sort of public entertainment, like a concert, but I couldn’t do so since going anywhere in Jordan (for a foreign-looking 16 year old girl) without a cell phone is a serious threat to safety. I obviously couldn’t walk to anyone’s house either because with the creation of the telephone, people began to disperse and live farther away from each other. For these college students to be whining about no electronic media for 24 hours when they can drive, live in a country where girls meeting strangers isn’t a taboo, and have forms of public entertainment almost every hour of the day is absolutely pathetic. I’m definitely not as dependent as these students are, which is actually quite a bit since I’ve been using computers and technology since I was three and use the internet for absolutely everything I do. I almost can’t bring myself to comprehend the level of addiction these students have to be at to feel bored after just 24 hours. Going without technology for a prolonged period of time makes you feel trapped and isolated and that is definitely the biggest problem—The severe lack of communication with the outside world. In a normal country, the way to deal with this would be simply to walk out and meet people but that is pretty much impossible in Jordan because it’s just not something people randomly do here. It’s true, we have become a society too dependent on electronic media, however, we also cannot expect to revert from that because modern society has been fashioned around this media. Up-to-date news is literally impossible to obtain without a television or the Internet since newspapers cannot be constantly upgraded. The article mentions events such as 9/11 and the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami; I can remember the exact second I saw the second world trade center tower go down and the extreme chaos that was created after the tsunami. I saw history, emotion, culture, and people. These things cannot be felt in such a way unless electronic media exists.

This article made me to re-think about how important are TV, cell phone, Computer, I-pod, radio, video etc. in my life! I cannot imagine my life without computer at all! but i think i might be able survive for 24 hours, i might actually not. I have never tried this. It is true that, Electronic Media has bad impacts on us, but it also helps us alot. For example, we wouldn't be able to communicate with people out of our countries, even cities easily. If we didn't have the electronic media we wouldn't have the plane to fly us from one destination to anouther. Electronic Media is one of the most important things nowadays in our lives. And we are all addicted to them. I cannot imagine my life without it!!!!

The article the “Longest Day” showed me how addicted I was to technology. Technology is very important for me and it would be a living nightmare not to be able to listen to my music or play my games. I and so do my friends know that I may be able to last a day without technology, but with a lot of difficulty. However, if I were to be forced not to touch technology for a day, I believe I’d be able to figure out what to do. With my extra time I would be able to do many productive activities such as sports or my music practice. I’d be able to spend much more time with my family and I’d be able to spend a lot of time with my friends.
I believe my biggest problem would be to stay away from technology. Just a glance or a sound of technology I may have been hooked. The way I would deal with this problem would be to go to a park and bring with me all sorts of productive activities.

After reading this article "the longest day" I thought about how living would be without electronics for a day. I would be lost, becuause there would not be anything that im used to. No tv, ipod, computer, cellphone, and ect. I wouldnot be able to watch tv or go on the internet or check my email, call friends on my cell phone, play games on the internet, do my homework, ect.

I am just as dependent on digital media as the kids in the articles becuase i need cell phones computers tv's just as much as they do. I would think about going on the internet or playing games with the extra time thats how important digital media is or draw a picture, eat food to get my mind of bordom, play outside, ect. My biggest problem would be finding what to do in spare time thats is useful or benifential. Ands thats how life without digital media would be.

Reading this article "The Longest Day", I started to think, how people back then in the old times did not use any technology and relay on them self’s and how people now days relay on technology. If u asked me to not use any technology for 24 hours I would say “no problem” because I usually do not use technology on school days accept for homework and projects, I would just go out side and play basketball, soccer or skate. I’m not a “electronic freak” or anything. But having to do my homework, essays, researches and projects with out technology will be very hard.

I do need sometime to check my e-mails. I would not really care is I did not use electronics for a week but a month would be too much. I would barely use any electronics when I was in Canada this summer I would play and talk to friends but now here I use technology more because I’m very bored.
