Teens Take Tech to Class

Middle and high school students are increasingly relying on technology, including laptops, flash drives and all-in-one printers. That has many administrators struggling to keep their school policies up to date. Our article this week looks at students in one part of the U.S. to see how students have embraced technology in their lives. Go to the link below and read the article. Write a reflective comment that expresses your opinion and addresses my questions.

As you read about the students in the article, do you think that they are typical? What would you expect the average student at our school to have? How do local prices compare with other countries in considering the cost of these devices? Does the price affect people’s decisions to purchase technological tools? Which of the things described do you think would be useful for students? Which are not needed? Which do you think you will need to purchase when you go to college? Which should we require students to have now?

Response to Teens Take Tech to Class

As I read this article, I started to get a feeling that this article was for me. What the article said was all true to me. I wanted a cell phone because everybody had one, and I wanted I-Pod like everyone else. In my opinion, I think this is typical in any school you go to; everyone wants a phone and an I-Pod since you’re kind of “cool” if you have one. In our school, an average student would have an I-Pod or a MP3 player and a cell phone. I’ve seen little kids in 2nd grade taking a super cool phone out from their pocket and call their parent. I think these kids can get phone easily because the prices here are lower than many other countries. Also, it is mostly because their parents are rich. I’ve noticed many students changing their phone every year. These cheap prices can affect people by making them buy cell phones, I-Pods, and maybe even lab tops easily. I guess that a cell phone would be the most important device since some people do lots activity in and out of school, such as me. So people like me may need a cell phone to contact their parents in emergency or in a hurry. As for not needed, a lab top would certainly be one because a student doesn’t need to have a computer when there are several of them at their house or at school. But when you go to college, you may need to buy a lab top since the courses are harder and you move around places a lot. But for now, I think only a cell phone would be enough.

Teens take tech to class:

Reading this article, i don't think that most students are like this, yes all my friends have cell phones and bring them to school and yes i have one too but i don't bring it to school. yes just about everyone i know has an MP3 player or iPod and so do I. The point is that everyone wants what everyone else has, like the bandwagon faulty thinking, everyone wants it but they don't need it. I would say that the average student at our school has at least: mobile phone, iPod or MP3, some sort of gaming console, a computer, USB flash drive and maybe a palmpocket PDA type of instrument. local prices are actually more expensive than in the US. For example, the iPhone costs i believe $500 in America, but here it costs 6-700JOD, computers are also a lot less expensive in the USA than here for the same quality. In most places the price affects people's choice but here the people think they need the best of everything or the most expensive. A flash drive would be useful to students because as the article states, you can bring it in and finish your work up at school, or if you are in a computer class then you can just save stuff on it and put it in your class' folder at school. A laptop might be useful, but not practical, graphing calculators are only useful if you aren't really good enough at math that you can't do the problem, plus they don't tell you the steps which most math teachers want to see. Cell phones are not needed at school and at most schools aren't even allowed, iPods are the same, not needed for or at school. Digital recorders are also not needed unless you are receiving a lecture. When i get to college the only things i will need to purchase will be a laptop, a working flash drive, and that's pretty much it, unless i will actually need a graphing calculator. The only things that students should be required to have now are USB flash drives and a regular scientific calculator unless you are in Pre-Cal or AP Calculus. Computers should be required only at home and not at school.

Technology is something that has affected education. It is normal that students my age have flash drives and computers. A lot of the homework we get is done from research on the internet, or have to written on Word Documents or presented on Power Points, so it’s only logical that we are using computers more often. Besides, we study technology in our school curriculum.

In many schools, in particular private schools, students have assimilated technology into their lives. For example; some High Schools use computers to conduct experiments that would be too dangerous or too expensive to do in real life. Others use Second Life as a tool to study literature or history. Colleges bring us more challenging courses and with new challenges come new innovations. We buy a laptop, an easy to use, portable walking library, to help us with our studies.

Prices influence us the most when buying a laptop or, for example, a cell phone. We tend to buy laptops the have a certain price range. As consumers we try to buy powerful, but cheap products. In the last twenty years the prices of computers, printers, and scanners have gone down, and we have become closer to technology.

The people in the article are typical beacuase most people have a lbtop, cellphon, ipod, ect. And when people start to get this things they tell there friends and there frieds start wanting them too. At our school almost every one has a cellphone, ipod, and a laptob. I even see 5th graders and 4th graders taking out cellphones and ipods in the bus. Im not sure about labtops in jordan if there chaeper or not becuase my labtop is from houston but i do know that cellphone are cheaper in jordaqn than the states. I think the price does not affect the parent becuase most of the partens have enough mmoney to buy cell phones i think what feature and signals the phone has what makes the parent buy that certan cell phone. I think all the things are useful becuase an i pod is used for entertainment, a labtop is used for school and other things, and a cellphone would be used for communicating with other people. when you go to collage you need every thing a labtop, i-pod, and cellphone mostly the labtop and the cellphone. in highschool you need just about the same things but u can live without a labtop becuase you can just use your parents you also need a flash drive. Most of the teachers said it was optional to buy a flash drive but after a week of school you use the flash drive almost every day.

The further I got into the article, the more I agreed with the students. There are technological devices that are the basics that you have to have, like a cell phone, mp3, and a computer at home. Most students going to private schools like our have these electronic devices because they need them for homework and entertainment but many people don’t have them. This doesn’t mean that they don’t want them, some poor families don’t have a cell phone, computer, or mp3 players because they cant afford it. Of course there are some people that simply don’t want these devices, but there aren’t too many of them around the world, most people simply enjoy technology. I can’t picture my life without these electronic basics.

The prices from these devices range from low to high, we here in Jordan are pretty much on the medium-low price range. A Memory Stick costs as low as 8JD in Jordan where in Europe they don’t get much less than 12 Euro. People with less money can’t afford more expensive technology limiting them to cheap devices if any at all. The device that I use the most as a student is the memory stick. I can save all my homework and class work on it and bring it home or to school. Even though I also use portable hard-disk I rarely use it therefore it is the device that is not needed, for me. And when I go to college the device that I will need is a laptop that works and has wireless internet. This school should also require each student to have a flash drive with them; it makes everybody’s life easier when it comes to saving documents on the computer.

I believe at this present day, the older you are as a teenager, the more likely you are to have various technology tools at hand in day-to-day life. I find it a bit disturbing though how elementary students are starting to use technology in the form of internet-use since the internet can be extremely misleading, vast, and even dangerous for kids under 12 or 13 to use. The fact that Tiffany Scott, who is only 10 years old, has a cellphone for regular use is also a bit odd since I remember my parents actually debating on whether or not giving me a cellphone on my 10th birthday was appropriate for SAFETY usage. To be 10 years old and actually using a cellphone for socializing is a bit depressing since these kids should be hanging out in real life, not with man-made devices. They’re just too young. I’m pretty sure the average student in our school owns a cellphone, mp3 player, and a USB since cellphones are essential for contacting other students directly, rather than contacting their parents or the maid and having to “leave a message,” mp3 players definitely help improve work habits and pacing, and USB’s can compress important documents into the palm of your hand. I don’t think many students have their own laptops since they aren’t required for editing essays, working on projects, etc. if a USB and school computer are available. I think the local price for these devices is pretty standard compared to the rest of the world and I do believe the price affects people’s decisions when purchasing technological tools since a lot of the items on the market today are over-the-top, unnecessary, and more expensive than what a basic item would be. For example, many people are now buying “iphones” when they could simply buy a separate mp3 player and phone from cheaper companies, receive the same and maybe even simpler features, and save their money. I’ll probably end up purchasing a laptop when I go to college simply because I would be able to work in various areas of the campus at various times without having to worry about other people editing or copying my work. I definitely think students should be required to own a USB as a minimal requirement since it definitely helps make turning-in assignments easier and eliminates the “printer isn’t working” excuse when students haven’t done their work.

In my opinion the amount of technology that they have and use if quite typical of people that are living in this generation. At school now I presume that it would be very hard to find somebody that doesn’t have a cell phone or iPod. Most of the students at our school probably have their own laptop. People get this kind of technology earlier in life. For instance I remember that I got my first laptop when I was 8 or 9. Price wise I do believe that of course Jordan is more expensive then the states or Europe because Jordan doesn’t have any manufacturing companies or factories here so every thing is imported. I do not however think that price plays I big part in people purchasing electrical equipment. The only thing that I think Jordan is lacking greatly in is that Jordan doesn’t have much of a variety in types or brands of electronics. I think that it is important for students to have laptops because it allows them to do their own work and keep their documents private and not have to always fight for the computer at home etc… I also think that it is very important for students to have USB drivers because this allows them to easily transport information back and forth. A cell phone is also something of great importance because it allows you to communicate in case of emergency or to make plans. I don’t however think that an iPod is a necessity but it is very nice to have. When I got to college I expect I will need to get a laptop, printer, flash disk, camera, video camera. At the moment we should require students to have flash disks so it’s easier to transfer information.

In today’s society, these kids are typical. If I took a poll in my school, I am willing to bet 90% of students in the high school have an ipod, a USB, a cell phone and a laptop. I personally own a laptop, an ipod, a cellphone, and a USB. I think it is necessary to own a laptop, as it keeps people entertained and helps people do most of their work whether school work or business. In Jordan the cost of these products are much higher because of customs and taxes. An ipod in the U.S. is 250 dollars where as in Jordan it is 300 dinars. My $1200 laptop costs 1500JD in Jordan. People usually decide to wait for their vacation to Europe or America to buy the same thing for cheaper. I feel that laptops are useful for students to be able to do all their work on one computer that they can take to school, or a friends house with no problem. W hen going to college you will definitely need a laptop for work, an ipod for your long walks to classes, a usb to save work, and a cellphone to call home. Students should absolutely have a usb to eliminate the my dog ate my homework excuse at school.

After reading the article, I realized that students do need all these things such as laptops and flash drives. The average student in our school would have an ipod, cell phone, laptop (or PC), and flash drive. I think when these devices were brand new, prices mattered to the customers but now since they have become a part of their lives, they buy them disregarding the prices. And now since a lot of people all over the world have these devices, countries are now offering the same prices since they can make the same profit. I think laptops are very important to students because these days they're used for presentations in class and some students can't present otherwise.
Although you don't need a cellphone and mp3 player for school, you still need it everyday outside. A flash drive and laptop are most essential at school.

Teens Take Tech To Class:

When I read this article I thought to myself that this was what was happening to my school. Everyone I’ve met in this school has a flash drive and many of them have I-pods. Pretty much everyone have a computer or a laptop at his or her house. Everyone uses their technology to help them in school. People use the flash drives to take their work to their house so they can work on it some more. So this is very typical for kids to be in touch with technology in school. Sometimes technology cost more in the States than other countries. The thing people would need in college is a flash drive and a laptop. These two pieces of technology would greatly help the college students. Right now kids should just have a flash drive and a computer in their house.

Reading this article "Teens take tech to class” made me wonder how most students resembled this like having the best cell phones then buying better ones. most of my friends and people I know have cell phones And how most people have ipods, cell phones, USB’s, and some type of game systems I have these things but I don’t bring them so school. The point is that people want what other people have. The prices in America are more expensive when it comes out but when the price goes down countries like the Middle East are more expensive.

For example, a PS3 of 500$ now but in Jordan it around 10,00JD. Also computers are cheaper in the US then here. USB’s are useful for students so u can save and finish your work at home or school. A laptop might be useful for people but not that much u don’t need a laptop when you’re a child it is useful for collage students and business people.
