Most people are familiar with YouTube through viewing videos there or perhaps posting a video. A professor at a college in California has created a course to “explore the role of the popular site.” Begin your assignment by going to the link below and read the brief article. Next, go to the link at the end of the article and view Intro to Learning from YouTube video and another video from the class. Read the comments below the videos. Write a reflective comment about the article and the class.
What value do you see in having a class like this? Would you take this class if it were offered at the college you will attend? If you were the instructor, what kinds of lessons would you have? What kinds of questions should be asked in a class like that?
To view the videos you have to have a YouTube account. If you are unable or unwilling to have an account, please contact me. We can use my account and schedule viewing during a lunch time.

Answer to “Youtube Class”
As I read the article and watched the article, I felt awed at how fast the internet was slithering into our lives. They were like bacteria: they kept coming up more and more everywhere. Nowadays, we can’t do anything without internets. We find articles on it, read news, put money in, play games, do our home works, and much more that it has become our friend. As I watched the video, the class seemed to be well organized and the teacher looked like she studied digital media a lot. If I had chance though, I would not probably take it. My reason for it is because of several disadvantages. The first disadvantage is the most important one: you can not ask question to the teachers. This is very important because if you don’t understand what you are listening to, you wouldn’t be able to learn anything from the teacher! What’s the use when you don’t learn anything? Also, you might get drowsy during the video and might sleep without anyone to wake you up. No one would know anyway since it’s a video. I were the instructor, I would teach the same thing as her in a fun way. She is doing exactly right. In the class like that, any kind of question related to it should b3e answered. Also, by putting question on the comments box, people who’s watching it on You tube would be able to get answers from the teacher.
In my personal opinion I do not think that a YouTube video to be used in class that beneficial. I do not fully understand the use in general life to have a full course having people view and comment on different posting people put up on YouTube. This site could be potentially dangerous. If this YouTube course was offered at the university I am going to I do not think that I would enroll in that class, it would rather use my college credits that would benefit me more in my life, not YouTube.
If I were the instructor of the class I would “post” all of my assignments on YouTube to make my student be interacting with the site in every day life. It would also be very useful if I had all of my lectures video taped so that I could also post them so the students would have not reason for not being able to complete an assignment. The lessons that I would have at first would be about YouTube and the potential dangers and ways that all students should post. For instance writing reflective comments instead of just babbling and not “slang” bad word or short hand should be used. Each week, I would give the students certain topics, like for instance you must comment on a video about golf or astronomy, so I wouldn’t have student commenting on inappropriate footage. In a class like this it is most important to ask many questions, for instance if there is something that you should not be viewing then please tell the teacher, and to check in with the teacher that each video is appropriate. You should also never abuse your account.
Response to "Learning From YouTube"
The value of having a class like this is that it would be interesting, people go onto YouTube all the time so if you had a class on it, they would be really interested. If I was offered a course like this in college I would take it; it would be fun, interesting, and an easy grade, what more could you want? If I was the instructor I would probably have classes where we go through all the videos posted and discuss them and the comments; much like we do with the blogs. I would also find some other interesting videos and we could watch those and discuss the new videos. The questions i would ask would be something simple, for example, one question would be, "Does your video truly show who you are or want to be? Or is it just an idea? Explain."

Reading this article "YouTube class” In my opinion I think that the value of having a class like this would be very exciting, YouTube is very popular and people go on it a lot so I don’t think people would fail. I would definitely attend this class if it would be offered in collage, it would be enjoying. If I were the instructor I would make lots of articles and make my students post comments on how they think and sometimes do a project by creating videos and posting them. I would focus on the subject and not let them off. Perhaps I would also post video of directions and what they have to do so they would not have any explanation why they did not do it. The question I would ask would be like, why it’s important to post comments and what you thought after watching the video and explain why you think this.

I believe the value in having a class like this lies in the fact that it gives media students a “hands on” experience in a different environment or situation than that of a home setting. It also gives space for discussion through postings, which can often be helpful for students who do not like to speak up in class or who have trouble due to “debate hogs” and such. This class could also help students adjust to their own needs and schedules so that they could review missed information in class by simply logging into youtube and re-attending the class. If this was offered at the college I will attend, I would probably take it on a trial basis since I believe it does offer some benefits, however, it reduces the college experience to something that is used every day in personal life and doesn’t seem like such an educational tool at first glance. If I were the instructor, I would have lessons and questions based on defining the youtube “culture,” why people use youtube, a brief history of youtube, how youtube has affected current events such as the U.S. elections and the spread of news events and multimedia, and ethical issues involved in the distribution of copyrighted material on youtube.

As I read this article I wanted to have classes on Youtube too. It is simply the coolest way to learn online! It would be good to have a class like this because while the teachter talks you can pause the movie and look up a word that you did not understand. You could also rewind the movie if you did not understand something to hear it again! If i where an teacher on Youtube, i would teach computer literacy or something to do with computer because my class is on a computer. You could simply answer a question by typing a response or posting a video responce. therefore this is an effective way of learning.

This class helps give the students experience with a hands on class with assignments and classes all on YouTube. In my opinion, the best way to learn something is to physically try it rather than just think about doing it and taking notes. This online course is also useful because it helps keep track of who speaks, who asks questions, and who is shy. If a student is shy to speak their mind in front of a class, he/she can simply post a comment on the video in the comfort of his home. This class is also helpful because if the student misses something the teacher said, they can just go back to the video and replay it. This also clears up any excuses where the student claims he didn’t hear the teacher say the directions and the teacher has no way in checking if this is true. If I were offered this class in college, I would most likely attend because not only is it an interesting experience, it may be a better way for my generation to learn. However, I feel that taking this class may take away from the college lifestyle that high school students normally dream of. Not having to go to a seminar on campus makes people lazy and keeps them home for too long, which isn’t the objective of going to a university. Going to university is about interacting with others and participating in discussions and finding out what you truly are meant to do in the future. If I were the professor of this course, I would make sure the students know what YouTube really is, how it can be used, and how it affects our society. YouTube has affected many things such as Presidential Debates, “How-to” videos, and other educational as well as entertaining things.
About the new Youtube class system, I believe that it has the potential of being very effective. Maybe students can even learn more this way. Since so many students spend most of their time online and even on Youtube watching videos, they might as well do it in a productive way, attending class online. I think this will help them academically as well, since some students fail to show up to lectures or have trouble taking notes during class; youtube solves that problem since you can log on at any time you want and you can stop, pause, rewind or fastforward as often as you want. And since the website is that of interest, it will attract students and they will be eager to learn about the new system. I would definitely take this class if it was offered at a college I'm attending, I think it would provide an immense amount of help especially if I sometimes can't concentrate in class or something. If I was one of the professors posting my course online, I would definitely put emphasis on what students need most help on. The video being available to them on the website, this would make it easier for them to go back at anytime and recheck what I've said. This would help me as a teacher since I wouldn't have to repeat things anymore. I'm not sure about what kinds of questions would be asked but I'm sure that at first students will have to take some time getting used to the new course system. Questions will also be asked as comments and you wouldn't have to raise your hand in order to say something anymore, you would simply just post it and the teacher would get back to you.
Reading the Youtube article and watching the movie posted by the professor opened my eyes to how slowly and poorly some schools and colleges adapt to technology. I don’t see any relevance to Youtube being used as a school assignment because it gives little student-teacher interaction and does not keep you focused as well as sitting in class. Classes on Youtube don’t interest me because it offers a too relaxed and lazy environment to study. A college should give the best facilities and should use as much of the available technology as possible, but like the professor said Youtube is incredibly underwhelming when it comes to educational related subjects.
However, as an instructor for a Youtube class I would give listens on Digital Media because it emphasizes its use. I would talk about how website like Youtube are more commercial related than, for example the Arts or education.
When reading the article and seeing the video I was amazed that in college people didn’t use that much technology. In my opinion the class seems to benefit only the people who don’t know anything about Youtube but it also allows people to get an easy way of getting a college credit. People who already know about Youtube could just use class as a way of getting an easy college credit. I wouldn’t take the class since I already know many things about Youtube. It would be a waste of time for me to take this class if I could take another class that could benefit me better. If I was the instructor I would make the lessons fun and creative. I’d make the students watch beneficial videos and I’d expect a good comment on each one. The questions that should be asked in this class should be about Youtube. They should be good and interesting questions about Youtube.

After reading the this article, I wondered , how the internet helping several new ideas each day. These days, we would feel lost without internet, we need internet for many things in our daily life, such as homework, entertainment, news, and several other things. Although, the idea of having collage classes on You Tube sounds very interesting, also classes seem highly educational, but if I had the chance to attend classes on You Tube I would not take it. Because, there is many things you can do in regular classes that you can’t do on You Tube or the internet in general, such as asking questions and getting answers immediately, socializing, school activities, and etc. What is the point of attending classes if you don’t understand something and you can’t ask questions about it face to face? You would always feel isolated and bored from lack of students. If I was the teacher I would post a video and write a comment related to You Tube and have questions and answers down so the students can answer the question and check to see if there answer is correct
