When Tech Innovation Has a Social Mission

Innovation in technology is not new. New ideas seem to be an inherent part of what defines technology in this day and age. This week’s article is about “social enterprises,” a combination of technology organization that pursues social missions and generates revenue. Go to the link below and read the article. Write a reflective comment that addresses my questions and expresses your opinion about the topic.

What social missions do you think should be addressed by social enterprises? How should social enterprises generate revenue from their operations? If you were going to start a business in technology, what would it be and how would you include a social mission with it?

The social enterprises should address social missions such as the delivery on financial, social, and environmental performance. Social enterprises should generate revenue from their operation by directly involving in the market and seek for viable trade organizations. Well, if I were to start a business in technology, I would do on laptops because their demands are increasing greatly these days. I would have a social mission of community benefit.

It depends on the social enterprises. Some of the important social missions are to help solve the social and economic problems that are going on in the community. For example to decrease pollution and to protect the Earth, and also things like finding a way to keep prices of things like gas low, because if it doesn’t decrease it will increase and that wouldn’t be good. The article stated that, “Earnings are retained and reinvested rather than being distributed to shareholders.” That doesn’t mean that they don’t produce an income. More or less, they produce 50 million dollars every year. That includes the incomes and the money they spend on social enterprises and even the money that they keep and invest. If I was to start a business in technology it would be related to cell phones and connecting people. I think that nowadays the usage of cell phones is important and it’s getting more expensive. I would want to try to find a way so that their usage isn’t as costly. The social mission I would include would be to help connect people to distribute food to places because a lot of people are dying because they are starving because they don’t have access to food.

These social entrepreneurs must be addressing issues like supporting disadvantaged community, including both individuals and groups or organizations. They could either produce goods or provide services to a market in order to generate revenue. If I were going to start a business, I would choose to offer some kind of training programs and promotional opportunities at this growing field of technology. This would have salutary effects on some parts of disadvantaged community.

I think technology has two sides.
Social and scientific.
It benefits either side. It helps our lives or helps the community or anything such as that. It's social. If it's for research, for learning new things, it's for science. In the end though, all the benefits from the scientific aspect end up for the social.
For me?
I'd go in to something new. The social scene, such as Myspace and Facebook, have it it large. I would invest in something along the lines of Ultra-Portable computers. That's where the future is at. Because it's power and the size is perfect for a laptop. It's weight is near nothing. It's perfect for the social scene

Social enterprises should focus mainly on helping out third world countries. Most, if not all, of the social enterprises around today were established in well developed countries. They should use their capabilities and efforts towards helping under-developed countries. There’s nothing wrong with generating revenue from social missions because an enterprise does need a source of income in order to continue and improve production. If I were to start my own social enterprise I would probably invest in a telecom company. I’m a big user of cell phones so it would be convenient for me to start up a company with reasonable call rates and special offers that will enable people to talk more on the phone. The revenue that my company would be generated would go to cancer foundations in Jordan, specifically breast cancer. A lot of people suffer from breast cancer but are not able to receive treatment due to the high cost of treatment.

Social enterprises should set their goals for all types of people, regardless of ethnicity or class. They should venture on social missions that help to create a better society. One way they can obtain the goal of that mission is through providing knowledge to the public. Whether it is providing free service unto the information on internet, or creating areas of informal discussions where people may communicate and learn from one another. As to how these enterprises should generate revenue, philanthropy could be a source, though it would be inconsistent and not reliable upon. The obvious choices would include doing what any modern day internet enterprise would do: gain revenue from advertisements. As for technological social enterprises, they could try to recycle old technology and sell it at a much easily afforded price for the public. I I were to start a business in technology, I would follow Omar Kawash's ideas. I would invest in portable technology such as laptops or MP3 players. The demands of modern day consumers are very high when it comes to such technologies. My social mission however is a difficult issue to manage when trying to run such businesses that typically are expensive to the public. Our social mission will be much like Google's philanthropic donations to third world countries. However, besides donating money to help people in need, my technology will also give people the ability to interact at almost no charge, much like the push-to-talk button that Vodaphone introduced in Eygpt. The laptops created by my enterprise will have the capabilty to interact with similar makes without the need for the internet or money, in a walkie-talkie manner. Educating and connecting people would be my enterprises goal, and even if our technology isn't as new-age as people may think, as long as it effectively serves it purpose, then it is not obsolete.

Social enterprises should help out schools, small communities, and help spread the World Wide Web not in cities, where there is already so much knowledge but in underdeveloped countries and villages. These enterprises could get their capital from advertising and investment. If I were to start a business in technology with enough capital to back me up, I would introduce my own Space Tourism Company, designing aircraft that could travel beyond the atmosphere and into the emptiness of space. Space is the future of mankind and it would be most benefiting in the long run.

The social enterprises should address the third world countries such as Kenya, and Somalia because of their major financial issues they are facing, and they don't have to generate revenue because people are dying of starvation and diseases such as AIDS or leukemia in the third world countries so they should be helped as soon as possible.
And if I start a company, I would probably open a large technology store that sells all kinds of machines and inventions and I would donate large portions of the profit to those third world countries so that They could benefit.

Social enterprises should help developing countries gain economic status. They can generate revenue from advertisement of their enterprise. If I was going to start a business in technology I would include a social missions of teaching and giving children in underdeveloped countries about computers.

I think social enterprises should address whichever missions they choose--be it technologically or economically helpful in nature. As well, revenue can come from any angle, but obviously it is best if it doesn't involve hedge funds (because those are scary.) If I were to start a business in technology, I'm not sure what it would do. I would like it to help build communities and possibly help orphans.

Well, as the shareholders do get nothing of the profit made and that all money made is invested into developing the technology, I think they should take like a certain percent and invest it into helping the poor and uneducated. When doing such a thing, your company will gain an even bigger and better recognition, possibly world wide, in which then you'll be even making more revenue. They can generate revenue in many ways, just as I mentioned a way earlier. But other ways can include commercializing their products or selling more consumer goods. I wouldn't be quite sure on what kind of company I would want to run, but its surely something relating to computers if it were for the sake of a social mission. Computers are simply the future of the world and since many countries lack the technology and money, I'd partially invest into helping those countries by giving them or selling them computers at cheaper prices. There you have my social mission

I think social enterprises should help all kinds of people no matter what there status is, how wealthy they are, or what race you are. Everyone needs help and no one can deny that unless you are a very arrogant person. I also agree with Sali; Although social enterprising is focusing on all the kinds of people, they should help all of the most undeveloped countries first because the need it more than a lot of developed countries, like America or china. I'm sure most of the Chinese people and most Americans can live another day without help when in plenty of third world countries, people are dying day in and day out because they don't have sanitary water or enough food to feed their whole family.

The social missions that I think should be the focus of social enterprises are ones that help the war-damaged people of the world. They should use their money and their advertisement to enforce peaceful ideals and try to slowly remove images of violence, which they have the power to do. I think they should generate revenue from these operations by not only relying on charity, but paying for themselves. I would start a business that creates sites for downloading music the fastest way possible for the cheapest amount. I would include a social mission with it by only allowing influential music in it and have it be non-violent. I would also use my advertising to promote these ideals.

Social enterprises should address social and community issues such as education. This should be for the country of the United States. The incomes that these enterprises generate should go to building new schools, providing writing utensils and other school material, and also to provide financial aid for college level students. I fully support these non-profit organizations because even though they might not make a lot of materialistic profit, they might make some other social advantages. If I were to start up my own social enterprise, I would produce computer mice. I am going to attack the global financial market with computer mice. These mice will be cheap, effective, and stylish. The main advertising idea behind them is that all their revenues will be going to education for needy children around the country. Similar to the Livestrong bands, these mice will be the new stylish item on the market made for a good cause.

Social enterprises should help the economy. They should help schools so people can become educated. They should help hospitals to people can be healthy. The social enterprises can fundraise to make money. I would create cars that wouldn’t pollute and harm the environment. The social mission would help the healthcare because the environment would be cleaner, healthier, and safer to live in.

Missions that would be appropriate and meaningful for social enterprises to address should have to be about how we can help the world today or how the community should be helped. Social enterprises should send a message to the world that the world is improving. They can do that by helping natural resources to not run out or endangered animals to be kept or anything that is said to help our environment. Social enterprises should generate revenue from their operations by expanding and taking their work to a whole new level such as maybe putting things on the market and selling things. That could be a way. Another way would be to offer services or anything to do just to help people. I think that would really help. If I wanted to start a business with technology, the first thing I'd think of is how is this going to help the community or the world. I will have my reasons and then I will believe that it has meaning and it actually helps people. I would maybe be interested in working on something with the environment and relating to our human lives such as inventing something that would reduce the waste of paper and death of trees. Anyway and anything that helps the environment is a great thing to be working on.

The social missions that should be addressed by Social enterprise are social, financial, and environmental. By involving in the market and seek for viable trade organizations. I would do iPods because they are so popular these days, every kid has at least one. This will make me a lot of money

Some social missions should be to decrease pollution, protect endangered wildlife, and to conserve food and water. The organizations should get their revenue from government taxes and from donations. If I were to start business in technology, it would have to do with computers because of their increasing demand in the business, educational, and private world. My social mission would be one that would benefit everyone.
