We all should be concerned about viruses and people trying to do things to our computers at home. This week’s article shows us that these concerns should be shared by organizations and government agencies. Go to the link below and read the article. Write a reflective comment that shows you have read the article, expresses your views, and addresses my questions.
What sort of information do you think is covertly gathered by the governments that are using these sophisticated programs? Who do you think is really responsible for the GhostNet system? What is your opinion about this sort of practice? Is it ever justified? What should the Dalai Lama do now? The article quotes two researchers, “What Chinese spooks did in 2008, Russian crooks will do in 2010 and even low-budget criminals from less developed countries will follow in due course.” Does this bother you? What should we do about it?
Spy System Article

Honestly, I don’t know why people hack into the Dalai Lama’s files; like, I don’t know what there is to find hacking a religious leader’s computer file. I think the GhostNet is run by anybody who wants to get past international firewalls to find out information about other countries/ to spy. I do not feel this is justified at all, and it will get picked up by other, unauthorized computer geniuses just out to make trouble for people. And about less-developed countries getting their hands on this technology, I think that will only mean trouble for anybody able to get internet access. Your conversations will be watched online, meaning it is smart for you to watch what you put on the internet, and what you take from the internet.
Frankly, I think that the information gathered by the governments is about the hacking users which are used to define the place from which the user is using to hack other computers. In my opinion, anybody who wants to get through any security system might be responsible for the Ghost Net system. My opinion about this practice is that old fashioned countries like Pakistan are getting their hands on such technologies and systems to watch people and their actions, as a result people must be aware of what they say or write on the internet like Bank card numbers…etc In fact it is never justified 100%. I think Dalai Lama should protect her files from Ghost Net users by installing professional firewalls and anti-virus protection systems, to prevent any loss in any information. Off course the article quotes about the Chinese spooks bothered me a lot because these people are considered as a danger on people, because we all know that we might be victims of that practice. Although we could not do anything but protect our computers, but the majority of responsibility would be on the Chinese government because they must stop these users from doing their practices.
It seems that this program is very useful for spying or otherwise secretly seeing other people’s personal information, especially if it has the ability to turn on the audio and/or video- recording functions in the very room; it’s really scary when you think about it. It’s especially scary that they have access to embassy computers and that of the Dalai Lama. I don’t think that the Chinese government is behind this, I think it is another organization of some sort. It is completely unjustified, and is totally disrespectful. This bothers me a lot and I want to be protected from it, I wonder if some anti-virus programs can develop a defense system against these kind of hackers, that would be the best solution I think. That and finding the hackers.
Personally, I think that it is ok to hack into the Dalai Lamas files because the people should be able to see what their leader is doing, they should be able to know if he is a good leader or not. I think the GhostNet is run by a really rich guy who wants to take over the world, I think that because if he can hack into a religious leaders files then he can do whatever he wants. I feel that this is justified because people should be allowed to look at what the leader is doing, I mean look at what happened with George W. Bush, he played us like fools. What the Chinese people and the Russian people want to do does not bother me because I believe they have the right to do what they want to do.
The government probably wants to track things they view as illegal. There is a lot of stuff accessible on the internet. If someone is posting recipes for meth out there they should be able to intervene. Everyone is responsible for the system. Directly one person is but everyone else who doesn’t move to stop that person is also responsible. I think this practice is very understandable and in the case of the Dali Lama, justified. The Dali Lama is the leader of a sometimes violent separatist movement. Would the United States do any differently if there was a separatist movement there? I don't think so. It bothers me but all I can personally do is keep my computer security systems up to date.
Governments could covertly gather information on a countries weakness or some top secret project that they are working on. Governments could then use this new gathered information to infiltrate the country on the basis of the information gathered. I believe that the GhostNet system is controlled by a small group of highly skilled hackers who probably do what they do for fun. I think that this practice is rightly justified to be illegal, but I wouldn't mind to know how to hack into a system. Sometimes, hacking can be justified if the hackers are trying to find some important information that could prevent something bad to happen to humanity. This doesn't really bother me since by the time some low class criminals start to hack, we would have some sort of master protection from these hackers. Also, to prevent this, we could form our own team of expert hackers who could help protect us from the enemy hackers.
I believe that governments are willing to gather both personal information of the individuals and the other governments’ secret information. Since the base is mostly coming from China, I believe they have the heaviest responsibility to GhostNet. I do not think using sophisticated programs to hack into other computers is never justified, because not only individuals but also the nations may have critical damage. Dalai Lama should develop a system or program that should be able to block such programs hacking the system. Judging from the two quotes, it seems like the war of information and hacking will soon begin. I’m very bothered, because individuals will also be affected heavily in the war. One solution that I can suggest is to develop a vaccine or a system that prevents the invasion of unauthorized users.
The information that is gathered by governments by using these programs is probably personal or business information. The person who created it should be testified against and investigated, and gets arrested because they are not allowed to hack and spy on information that is private. This sort of practice is bad and invades privacy. It is supposed to be justified but sometimes people don’t get caught. He should testify against the guy for illegal spying and hacking of his personal files.
The article quotes two researchers, “What Chinese spooks did in 2008, Russian crooks will do in 2010 and even low-budget criminals from less developed countries will follow in due course.”
It bothers me, because it’s not fair at all for anyone to be watched by the government or anyone else. We should be more careful about the security of the personal info.
I think that people should not hack into government files because then they will find out top secret stuff and they could get it to terrorists and harm people. I think a rich man who is a drug dealer is responsible for this system or Bill Gates. I think this sort of practice is not a good thing. It is not justified. The Dalai Lama should change their program so that it does not get hacked. This bothers me because terrorists will grow, and more people will die. I do not see this as much of a problem, as it shows in this article.
Personal or business related information would be the kind that’s gathered by the government.
The people responsible for the Gostnet system would be anyone who is involved in hacking or stealing information.
Honestly, I think that hackers should be dealt with severely, imprisoned maybe. If the information was meant to be seen there would have been no need to hack it, so clearly it’s meant to be kept private! No, it’s never justified no one ever gets caught. He should carefully watch the information he adds on his computer.
It dose bother me, its very wrong to hack information that’s not meant to be known. And now people are doing this without responsibility. Make rules and laws that prevent this. Also we should make the system hard to hack.
Noor Mansur.
The information that is gathered by governments secretly has to be something that is extremely confidential such as military strength or government plans. I guess the Chinese government wants to learn about the information about Dalai Lama’s plans because I heard there was a conflict going on between the Chinese government and the Tibetans. I think a hacker community in developing countries is responsible for Ghostnet. Obviously, stealing other people’s files and damaging them without permission will never be justified and law should punish it. Dalai Lama should fist protect his files from foreign viruses, and track the hackers who invaded to his computer. The quotes bother me so much, since I don’t have any of those “confidential files”, but I think we should be more careful in blocking our computers from computer viruses or programs that harm our computers.
This article took me by surprise! I never expected things like that could happen, outside of movies.
Personal information, information that might affect or concern that government. Anyone involved in hacking or stealing is responsible for the GhostNet system.
Well, obviously I think it is wrong! It makes me sick and disappointed.
No, in my opinion this sort of action cannot be justified, ever.
The Dalai Lama shouldn't keep personal things online, and shouldn't trust technology, I think that he should keep his information and personal things in a gigantic safe under his bed.
Yes this does bother me! I think we should try harder, and use countries with superior technology like the US to find the hackers and eradicate them. The US should be spending their time doing that, instead of funding Israel in the mass murder of Palestinians, and ' helping ' Iraq by stealing their oil and killing their people.
