Wii Warriors, Wii Wounds

Computer games are fun. People often will become so involved that they can play a game for hours. This week’s article looks at the popular Wii system and some of the implications that using it can have on a person’s physical health. Go to the link below and read the article. Write a reflective comment that shows you have read the article, expresses your views, and addresses my questions.

If you are not familiar with the Wii system and how it works, do some research to familiarize yourself with it so that you can address my questions. Which of the Wii games do you think would be most likely to cause an injury and why? In the article, Dr. Halpern said that he treated two types of injuries. Which type would you be likely to sustain? Have you ever injured yourself while playing a computer game? What happened and how long did it take to recover? What advice would you give to adults who are considering playing games on a Wii?

This is something I’ve experience many times since November of 2006. I’ve always found it hilarious when I play wii Tennis with inexperienced video gamers playing tennis, I see them getting into a full tennis stance, and putting all their muscle behind each swing, and I’m standing behind them just flicking my wrist very calmly. The wii was intended to get players off the couch, unlike other game consoles, but unfortunately, people like myself have found an exploit to such games that ‘require’ you to get moving, by just simply using my wrist. I however find it kind of ridiculous that older players can immerse themselves so much that they get injured. I have never been injured playing a video game. Honestly, I’ve never sat down at a computer, or picked up a controller long enough that I experience physical problems. If this counts, I have spent a nights trying out a brand new game with 20 different people, and we don’t go to sleep at all, we just play till the game is finished. I have found it troublesome to try to stay awake the next day, but I only pull an all-nighter if it is a game that I have been anticipating for more than a year. Usually, I’d just take a mid-day nap (which I almost never do) and I’d be fine. I wouldn’t give any advice to older players, because obviously if they are getting very active in these games, they are enjoying them. I would just say to control the amount of time you devote to playing wii.

I always envied the people who had Wii since the games look really entertaining. However, after reading this article, I guess not purchasing Wii was not a totally bad choice after all. In my opinion, Wii badminton (Sports island) is the most dangerous sports existing. Recently, I’ve read in a newspaper article that badminton is the #1 sport in demanding the players to run a lot. Some elderly users or Wii might experience fatigue and other injuries that come from tedious workout. I never injured myself from playing games except for the fact that maybe the games affected my eyesight. My eyesight never recovered (obviously). I would advice the people who play to be careful and know your body limits.

I think that the bowling or the tennis would be very injury-inducing, considering that in real life you have to do a lot of arm movement in these activities. When I first tried to play the Wii, I made the same mistake that these people did, with too much body movement. However, I am surprised that people actually injure themselves with this activity, as I would think that people would learn after a few trys that full body motion is not needed. I think that the most likely injury that I would get if I were to play the Wii would be traumatic injury, with a twisted ankle or pulled shoulder. I would not be likely to play the Wii for a prolonged period of time, because I dislike computer games. I never have injured myself playing any computer game, except for maybe straining my eyes from not giving them a break. I would say to adults considering playing the Wii: be careful not to over-play, and give them tips that you do not need to do a full swing, but merely a flick of the wrist. And maybe take short breaks in between playing if they intend to play for prolonged periods of time. Other then that, have fun!

Frankly speaking, I never played Wii, but I am familiar with video games. I do know that Wii is an interesting application to use at home. Addressing the question of which games are likely to cause injury: Table-Tennis and Kick Boxing games are most likely to cause injury when playing in multiplayer gaming, because some people are so hyper when playing these types of games, as its hardware is the main factor to cause such physical injuries. Honestly, I’m not the type of person who sits on playing video games for hours, which resulted in keeping me away from computer and video games injuries. My advice for adults playing video games is to take short breaks in between each seminar, and to keep control of your obsession in such games.

Well, I have a Wii system at home and we have never experienced an injury or anything like that, we just play the game and enjoy it. At my house people of all ages play it, my little brother who is 5 years old plays it, even my grandfather who is 75 years old plays it. Its enjoyable for all ages. I think that the Wii badminton would be the one to cause most injury because when people play badminton they tend to jump and swing their hand pretty hard, they may even injure someone who is just watching. I think that the stress problems would be easier to sustain because it is not as bad as a knee injury, if a person is suffering from a knee injury it would be hard for them to walk, and do other active things. I have never been injured by playing a computer game. I think that only stupid people injure themselves by playing a computer game because they get carried away. The only piece of advice that I would give to people is to stretch their arms and I would also tell them not to get carried away as they are playing.

I think that the Wii games that require you to use most of your muscles would be the most likely to cause injury only to the new players to the Wii. Since the new players probably don't realize that you don't really have to go through the actual movements of the game, they may cause themselves some sort of injury. I, personally, have never suffered from any of the two specific injuries and I have not heard of any one who has. I also have never hurt myself when playing on any sort of gaming console. My advice to adults would be to take it slow and easy and try not to spend too much time on a specific game. This way, they wouldn't excersize the same muscle for an extended period of time.

I think the boxing game in Wii could cause injuries because you could hit the wall and break your bones or a glass by accident. I think I would probably get Traumatic injur maybe on my shoulder from the boxing game. I have never injured myself playing a computer game. I tell adults to go ahead and play Wii because it is fun. I think Wii is not a bad console and that there is no reason for you to not play it. The chances of you getting injured are very low too.

Wii games are so much fun, but nevertheless, they could be dangerous. The most likely game that you could hurt your self playing would be, in my opinion boxing. Whenever I’m on the wii and I play boxing my shoulder starts to hurt, so possibly for someone out of shape and old it could be a problem.

Unlike Dr. Halpern I’m not a doctor so I wouldn’t be able to treat any of their traumatic injuries. I could give advice though; I would advice that people take breaks from playing computer games too much, go outside smell the fresh air!

Personally I’ve never hurt my self playing a computer game. I rarely ever play computer games. If I did, however hurt myself I would treat it by going to the doctor. To old people I would advise that they don’t swing completely just a move of the wrist will do.

I believe playing sports game like tennis in Wii can cause the most likely to cause injury, because that needs wide space and uses only specific muscle. Among two kinds of injury, I think repetitive stress would be likely to sustain for me, because I’m easily addicted to game, and I heard that kind of pain can get acute pain during the night. Since I never played games like Wii, I never injured myself from playing computer games. I would advice to the people who buy Wii that they should use them wisely, with good time management.

I think things like Wii sports or Wii fit which require the player to get more physically into the game pose the biggest threat of injury.I would be most likely to get a traumatic injury. The worst injury I have gotten was when me and my friend were doing Wii boxing and got a bit too involved in it. He punched me in the mouth and I gave him a black eye. It was all ok though and neither injury was serious. If people do anything to prevent injury it should be to remember that the Wii is just a game and not serious.

I think table tennis would be the game that would most likely cause an injury. If played a lot, a person can overuse his arm muscles and end up hurting him or herself since the game requires quick reactions and powerful ones. If I was to play a lot of video games it wouldn’t require me to move whole body parts like the arm, legs or anything. The injury I would get is in my fingers and wrist from playing too much. I never injured myself by playing a computer but I have injured the computer itself. I would tell the adults to stretch before playing the Wii game.

Well Mr Beyer, HELLO, first of all.
I think that any Wii game that involves major movement is dangerous, but I believe that out of all Wii games those most involving thrusting of the limbs. I think the injury I would be most likely to sustain would be a back injury. I have back pains, and always end up hurting my back somehow. No, thankfully I have a life and don't waste my time on computer games. That was joke no offence to anyone, but no I honestly don't play computer games thus resulting in no injuries. First of all, see a marriage counsellor, there must be something wrong if you result to Wii games. If you're single, Wii games is the reason why, so stop and get out a bit. Really, i honestly have nothing else to say to those adults... apart from OMG REALLY?!?!!?!!?!?
