PowerPoint is a commonly used presentation tool. PowerPoint presentations often have a poor reputation, one that is often deserved. This week we look at the role that PowerPoint plays in the American military. You may be surprised by its ubiquitous presence. Go to the link below and read the article. Write a reflective comment that shows you have read the article, expresses your views, and addresses my questions.
The article expresses the concerns of military commanders that PowerPoint “stifles discussion, critical thinking and thoughtful decision-making.” What is your opinion about the use of PowerPoint? What should the commanders do to correct the problems that PowerPoint creates? What do you think about the amount of time that is spent in the military making PowerPoint slides? How should the military use PowerPoint? What should be done to make PowerPoint presentations more interesting? What do you think about the practice of using PowerPoint for “hypnotizing chickens?”

I think that the use of powerpoint is useful. I think that the commanders should correct the problems by talking to people who work and specialize in computers (powerpoint). I think that the amount of time spent on the powerpoints is okay. I think the military should keep using it the way that they have been but maybe make a few changes. I think to make the powerpoints more interesting they should make them shorter. I think that the use of powerpoint "hypnotizing chickens" is not very good, people should not be falling asleep in the meetings.
I use powerpoint a lot. Specially for school projects. It doesn't bother me that much unless there are a lot of bullets, transitions/effects and slides used. The commanders should reduce the use of too many bullets and transitions/effects and include just the basic information rather than writing down bunch of stuff. He can rather speak during the presentation and use just small and basic information on the slides. That will reduce the problem powerpoint creates. I think that rather than depending on powerpoint presentations, the military should speak more rather than wasting time adding information to the slides. That will make the slide boring and also waste a lot of time. Powerpoint presentations can be made more interesting by adding less text (basic information) and more of pictures, videos etc. A presentation should not be more than about 8-10 slides. I think that will make powerpoint presentation more interesting. If powerpoint presentations are just used for hypnotizing chicken i.e. making people bored of the presentation, they are of no use. First of all a powerpoint presentation should NEVER be of about 25 min. like said in the article. That can make anyone fall asleep. I think that they should be a maximum of 5-8 min.
PowerPoint, for me, is like any other means of presentation – when it is used effectively, it can be very useful, but if not, it is pointless and says nothing. In this case, the commanders should be able to explain exactly how they want things done in their PowerPoints, and pass out a more detailed handout to accompany it. There is no reason why PowerPoint should not be a useful asset in the US military. For example, I could imagine it being very useful at a tactical level if, for instance, a commander was giving a presentation about how his men will clear the Taliban from a certain region of Afghanistan. The commander could have words to the side of a detailed image or map of the region and it helps to illustrate his points and make them clearer. As for the amount of time being spent making PowerPoint slides, that is one of the downsides of any technology. Military leaders in World War II probably complained about how much time they spent on typewriters. The military should use PowerPoint in a way that emphasizes the important, and makes it less abstruse. I think more simple visuals, emphasizing the key points, and better presentation on behalf of the speaker would go a long way in preventing the “hypnotizing” of “chickens” and allowing the officers to say what they want to say more clearly.
I think that powerpoints are helpful, i use them a lot in school. I dont really mind about the amount of bullet points ect. I think the amount of time spent on powerpoints depends on how much infortmation should be put down on them. I think the military should continue using powerpoints, but they should try and make them less boring to the soilders.
I think that the use of PowerPoint is very good, and I am always using it for school projects. The commanders should talk to the technician about the problem and let him solve it.The time spent on making the PowerPoint is reasonable. In my opinion the military has been using PowerPoint perfectly and shouldn't change anything. I think that to make the PowerPoint more interesting then they should add more interesting things in them. I think that the practice of "hypnotizing chickens" is pretty cool. :)
In my opinion, PowerPoint is effective way for the presentation, but I think it depends on how you actually explain well rather than putting fancy map and image. Commanders should fully understand the concept of their presentation. To me, it seems like they are spending a lot of time in creating complicated PPT. Military should use the powerpoint in the simple concept because there is a information limit for the PPT. In PPT, maps and images have to use efficiently to express their main idea, not for fancy and with well presenter, who fully understands the concept. I think "Hypnotizing chickens"is used for clear explanation.
I disagree with the military and believe that PowerPoint help to visualize statements. I believe that there are no problems and all problems are imaginary so there should be no changes to PowerPoint. I think that the amount of time spending on PowerPoint by the military is a bit ridiculous. The military should be used for briefing. There should be more images and less text. I think using PowerPoint to hypnotize chickens is a bit ridiculous.
