Watching video via the Internet is becoming more and more popular. This week’s article looks at developments that have made video more accessible. Go to the link below and read the article. Write a reflective comment that shows you have read the article, expresses your views, and addresses my questions.
How many people do you know who practice “digital theft?” Do they download their video, use streaming, or both? What sorts of video do they watch? Is video piracy the main reason for the drop in DVD shipments or are there other reasons? Respond to the following quotation: “Young people, in particular, conclude that if it’s so easy, it can’t be wrong,” said Richard Cotton, the general counsel for NBC Universal. What do you think the movie studios should do to solve the piracy problem?

I know many people that download music and music illegally. All of my friends do that because of many reasons. Having an account on I-Tunes needs an address and Jordan is not on the list, so obviously the only way to get music and movies is from lime wire or any other program that downloads media illegally. Sometimes a person only wants to buy or get one song only out of an album and usually will be willing to pay for the whole album just for a song and same thing for the movie, the movie is usually very expensive and that’s why we all end up pirating movies. The best choice is to download media from the Internet without buying them, or paying money. I think video piracy is the main reason for the drop of DVD shipments, but other reasons can also be found if every single detail is analyzed. “Young people, in particular, conclude that if it’s so easy, it can’t be wrong,” said Richard Cotton. I agree with what he said, because everything is easier when you just download the music without having to put any personal information, or make an account. I think the movie studios should make DVDs cost less and they should have legal clear copies out right away after the movie has been out of the cinemas.
All of my friends carry out this action, even though it is illegal.
They both download videos and use streaming often.
They download all sorts of movies and videos. They download the latest theater movies to watch them on the computers at home, or even funny video clips that they may have heard of earlier and wished to watch.
Yes, video piracy is a huge factor that contributes to the idea of DVD shipment decreases.
Well today we have many easy applications to use, also many easy ways to obtain things. So for “young people” to think that if its that easy to obtain such movies it cant possibly be wrong, is understandable. Also if it were illegal to obtain such movies organizations should have taken more action to make it less impossible to obtain, and not that easy.
I think that these organizations should take steps in making pirated DVD’s way harder to obtain, and making they legal ones easier not the other way around.

A lot of people use illegal media downloading sites. Why? Because it is cheap/free, doesn’t have limits, and has a larger selection than legal sites. For example, in itunes, if you purchase music, you have to keep it on the account that you bought it on; you can’t give it to somebody because they would obviously have your password, and limited use of your account. Also, you can only hold music from up to 5 different accounts, which makes it hard to move music. If these sites are so easy to get movies, or music from, why would you even consider legal sites? If the movie companies want this problem lessened/stopped, they must lower the costs of movies, and release the movies on DVD right after they are done in the theaters. If the movies want higher income rates on their products, then maybe they should wake up and smell the coffee, because people are tired of waiting months just to go out and buy their favorite new movie, when it can be absolutely free and immediate on any online site.
I do know people who practice “digital theft” for downloading the latest movies, music and sometimes games and I’m one of them. I think that each person who owns a computer with an internet cable installed, he downloads music or movies by streaming or by downloading hacking programs. These people watch and download regular movies such as “007 James Bond” and many others. In my opinion the video piracy is the main reason for the decrease in the DVD shipments, off course anyone who founds something for free, he won’t choose the second choice which costs him much more. Young people said that its easy and it can’t be wrong, it is right because the pirates made it easy to encourage people to download from specific links, sometimes these are only for hacking as accepting the virus to invade your system to get a specific song that doesn’t worth formatting your whole system. It is not easy at all to stop these pirates from stealing these types of commercials, but the movie studios should install a copy protection on CD’s which stops the copying at any moment.
I know a lot of people who use “digital theft” however they do not consider it theft because it is given to you for free from the website. They watch all types of videos, from movies to song video clips. Video piracy is probably the main reason for the decrease in DVD shipments because a lot of people just make copies now. That quote is true because young people will do anything that is easy just because it is easy to do. I think that the movie studios cannot do much about this because it is world wide and too much to track down, just like what happened with Batman.
It would be very difficult for me to find a friend with an internet connection who has not practiced digital theft. Many people download thier movies and many people stream them. What I tend to see is that streaming takes much less effort and is usualy faster whereas people who can figure out how to use torrents will use them instead of streaming. People download all sorts of things but the most commen things I've seen are TV shows and new releases. In Jordan, digital piracy is much less prevelent then physical piracy. Most people don't even bother to download movies when they can be bought so cheaply in stores. The statement is in my opinion, wrong. It's very easy to steal from a small grocery store in Jordan but that does not mean young people do not perceive it as wrong. The movie studios need to understand that right now they only appeal to technologicaly less advanced people or people with strong morals. When they are able to drop prices to the point where the cost of a legitimate DVD makes it more convenient to pay that price instead of download the film, it might see an increase in sales.
I know some people who use Limewire to download music, but I don't know if they use the same program to download videos. I personally don't download videos since it takes forever and takes so much bandwidth. I have only downloaded one video once in my life, but I'm not too sure if my friends download videos. Everyone usually watches either movies or TV shows which means that they would download these types of videos. I believe that video piracy is the main reason why the DVD shipments are going down. Since people can get movies and TV shows for free from the internet, they believe that they don't need to buy the DVDs if they can get them for free. I agree with Richard Cotton's quote because its extremely easy to download a music file or video file from the internet and no one will know. I think that the movie studios should put a lock on their DVDs so that way people can't rip the files from the DVDs which would decrease the risk of video piracy.
Although I don’t know many people who practice digital theft, I do know a few who practice either downloading or streaming. My best friend actually gave me some streaming sites that I have used only once. But I also have met people who download movies to their USB and give them to friends to watch for free. My friends usually watch movies on these kind of sites. Another popular thing my friends download for free is music, this is usually downloaded, not streamed. I do think that the reason for the drop in DVD shipments is mainly video piracy, I cannot see any other obvious reason, except for maybe the recent economic crisis because people don’t want to waste money going to the movies. I agree with the statement “Young people…conclude that if it’s so easy, it can’t be wrong,” it’s the bandwagon effect, because if anyone’s doing it then it must be right. Also it isn’t taught to people at an early age that downloading movies is wrong, they won’t think that. I think, when people download, it is less of a moral dilemma rather then an easy access thing. I think that if the movie studios want to solve the piracy problem, they should track down these sites and make people pay or not permit them to watch movies for free, and reprimand the people that make the sites so that they stop making them. Also if the movie studios bring the media into this and make a big deal about it, then people will know that they will be reprimanded when caught, and it will serve as a warning. Overall, I like the free streaming and downloading, but I would understand why the movie studios are angry at people who perform digital theft.
Don't even get me started on the giant list of people i know who practice "digital theft". For them it's like drinking water.
They do both.
They watch movies that haven't even come out yet.
Of course video piracy is one of the main reasons, and probably the biggest for the drop of DVD shipments, but there are other reasons.
Sometimes the prices of certain DVD's can be a hassle for many buyers.
People who just want to enjoy a good movie shouldn't have to pay ridiculous amounts of money when they can get a copy of that movie that's a lot less to afford.
Richard Cotton's quote makes sense. Teens these days are Extra rebellious. They choose the simpler way out, because it's less work, quicker, and they won't get caught.
DVD's need to be less expensive! The prices these days are outrageous!
Movies should come out right about the same time as they come out in cinemas with DVD's.
